You are what you think, and your thoughts can either motivate and activate you to set sail for a positive life or they can wear you down and depress you and keep you in the same weak, ineffectual currents which you feel life has impose upon you.

True diligence starts with a knowledge of the self, for this, in the final analysis, is that really matters.   The purpose of your intellectual faculty is to enhance your well – being.

Bookish excellence alone and impressive scholastic credentials are not sufficient measures of diligence.  While they may help to give you a place in the world, they don’t necessarily ensure that you enjoy that place.

If your thoughts are negative, critical, destructive, then no matter how much money you earn, no matter how high your position, and no matter how much power you radiate you will not be a success.

True success requires true diligence, the measure of both is joy.  An effective, fulfilling life lived every moment of each day on an upbeat note is the only meaningful measure.

Life inevitably poses problems: disagreements, conflicts, money shortage, accidents, ill-health and deaths.  These problems can take time to solve, or perhaps, like the death of a loved one, they cannot be solved and require only the endurance and Gods Grace to accept what one cannot change, wisdom that comes from our Heavenly Father, however, teaches you to recognize the difference between inevitability and changeability.

Still, despite every conceivable misfortune, it is possible to avoid immobilizing depression and defeat if you keep your thought lifeward keeping your focus to God, if you maintain a diligent attitude and not fall into a state of self – abnegating irrationality.

You must evolve a whole new thinking process if you are to be truly diligent.  It is one thing to be acclaimed as highly diligent, it is another to direct this diligence into choosing your emotions.

What disrupts diligent action at any given moment is an eruption of some overpowering emotion.  Emotional people are not considered diligent, and conversely, diligent people are not considered emotional.

But it is not possible to live without emotion, and to try and repress emotions is unhealthy ….. How then does one behave diligently?

You must direct your emotions with your diligence, thus using you emotions to favorable ends.  Instead of letting your feelings govern your thinking, let your thinking govern your feelings.

Emotions don’t just happen to you; they are not simply a result of outside influences which have nothing to do with your volition.  Emotions are your reactions to outside influences.  They are a result of what you think has happened.  If you think clearly, you will also react favorably and meet the situation in a diligent way.

True diligence demands that you never choose self-defeating reactions.

Rational thinking is something we seldom indulge in when it comes to evaluating ourselves.  We may be rational when it comes to reading a book, writing a report, talking to somebody, and calculating the outcome of various options, such as where to go or how to spend or save money, but we are seldom rational when it comes to very personal issues.

Rational thinking can sweep away loneliness, frustrations boredom, bad habits and all the rest of the psychological ills which the human race is subjected to.  But people prefer to fill their minds with a barrage of neurotic messages.  They fear rational thought, they fear rational self-analysis.  They would rather blame the whole world than accept the fact that they are responsible for how they think, feel, and act.

Outside circumstances may indeed be unpleasant, but it is you who choose how this unpleasantness can affect you.  You can let a rude person put you down, or you can answer back,   you can choose to fell depressed after losing your loved one, or you can act rationally and realize that world must come to an end to everyone.  You can choose to feel angry, helpless and immobilized after losing your job, or you can direct your energies to finding another job.

Sometimes, perhaps, disaster may be a blessing in disguise.  People who lose their loved ones may find comfort in God and He can turn things around.  A person fired or declared redundant may find a better job or even be forced to start his own business.

Undiligent thinking is thought which focusses on limitations, diligent thinking is thought which meets the abundance of the world.  There is no scarcity of good things, there is only a poverty of attitude which fails to observe them.  Unhappiness is bred through selecting the worst possible interpretation of a situation.  Cultural misinformation has led you to believe that you aren’t responsible for your feelings, that things just happen to you and that you have to accept defeat when bad things happen to you and feel victorious when good things happen.  This information is a result of mass irrational thinking.

You are responsible for how you think and what you think, as well as how you feel and what you feel.

You may not be responsible for what people and events do to you, but you are responsible for your reactions to them.  You can choose to act with diligence, rather than immediately, that is un-diligently.

What is a diligent decision? A diligent decision is one which is creative, constrictive, and lifeward.  You may not always make the right decision because you have to act before you have all the necessary information but if you operate on the basis of constructive principles things will work out to your benefit.

Thought is a relentless creative power, and it is also a ruthlessly destructive power.  If you think rationally, you will tap its creative potential, and if you think irrationally, you will unleash its destructive potential.

Refusing to take responsibility for your own thought, feeling, and actions means that you choose to surrender the creative aspects of yourself.  This means that you will not control how you think but instead let yourself to overcome by frightened thoughts and maladaptive behavior which will prove to be a source of future embarrassment and regret.

To say for example “ he intimidates me” is to shirk responsibility for your thinking/ it is a form of irrational thinking.  While a person may have an overbearing manner which you aren’t responsible for, you are responsible for choosing to be intimidated, you are responsible for thinking, feeling, and acting intimidated.

Suppose, however you said. “ I make myself intimidated when confronted by his overbearing manner” you will find it very hard to choose to be intimidated.  You will not want to think, feel and act intimidated.  You will not want to reinforce instinctive and self-destructive thoughts when you are thinking rationally.

True diligence requires effort.  It is easier to be led than to lead; to act first and think later, than to think first and act later; to heed the first thought, than to heed the best thought; to be afraid, than to be courageous; to forsake control and resoponsiblity for who you are and where you are going, than to lead an effective, fulfilling, and joyful life. 

You are what you think all day long, so choose those thought which makes your day worth living.  Choose to be joyful it’s well worth it.
